Can you pressure wash a roof?
You can, and you shouldn't. High pressure blasts the granules off asphalt shingles — those granules are the shingle's UV protection, and losing them takes years off the roof. On metal it can drive water under the panels and damage the finish. Roofs get soft washed: low pressure, cleaning solution, dwell time, rinse.
What are the black streaks on my roof?
That's almost always Gloeocapsa magma, a hardy blue-green algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It spreads by airborne spores, which is why it usually shows up on one neighbor's roof and then the whole street. It holds moisture against the shingle and it will keep spreading until it's actually killed — rinsing it off just removes the visible layer.
Do you clean metal roofs?
Yes, and they're common out toward Cedar Creek and the rural lots. Metal roofs collect atmospheric grime, oxidation and organic growth in the panel seams. We clean them at low pressure with a solution that won't strip or dull the finish.
